MYPLACE Final Conference in Dubrovnik

Final conference of the four-year project MYPLACE (Memory, Youth, Political Legacy And Civic Engagement) was held from 5th to 7th of March in Dubrovnik. The project gathered sixteen countries across Europe together with their leading universities in fields of youth and political participation. The conference was attended by the representatives from the Institute of Social Sciences 'Ivo Pilar' - Croatian research team - but also by a member of a Croatian Youth Network, Nikola Bajai.

The aim of this project, funded by the European Commision and coordinated by the University of Warwick, was to investigate how young people's social participation is shaped by the „shadows“ of totalitarianism and populism in Europe in order to provide new, pan-European data that will not only measure levels of participation but capture the meanings young people attach to it.

The conference reflected on questions about challenges and benefits of collaboration between academic and non-academic partners within the project, but also on how does the memories of 'difficult past' affect the youth. Besides explaining the methodology of the project (based on surveys, cross-case ethnographic analysis and semi-structured interviews), there were discussions about project's contribution to the knowledge within the field of civic and political participation of the youth.

There have been several parallel sessions on ideology and attitudes toward extremism, the role of the state in terms of youth and political activism, euroscepticism, forms of youth activism, history and ideology relation, meaning of activism and the political heritage and socialization.
