No Hate Speech movement

The representative of the Croatian Youth Network participated in the Seminar for Online Activists and the European "No Hate Speech movement" Campaign Conference which took place from 4 till 9 November, with all stakeholders of the campaign.
Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, who opened the conference, stated: ‘Hate speech undermines democracy and leads to hate crimes. I am especially worried by the dimensions of online hate speech and cyberbullying against women and transgender people. The two together form an explosive cocktail that has already claimed too many lives of children and young people. It is time to say "stop!"’. The plenary was broken up into eleven workshops to discuss and plan various activities for 2014. Themes included: European Action Days, Education Strategies against Hate Speech and Hate Speech in Political Discourse and the European Parliament Elections, among many more.
The conference was closed by Snežana Samardžić-Marković, Director General of Democracy of the Council of Europe who affirmed her commitment to the campaign and said: ‘We are too often confronted with pessimism… we are in a human rights crisis that cuts across many of our societies.’ She also stressed the importance of addressing the ‘root causes’ of hate speech.
