Schools show great interest for civic education

More than 470 school teachers, principals and professional associates from schools all over Croatia showed interest to participate in the Presentation of the draft of the future curricula of Education on Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship, together with the presentation of the educational program for the same target group about the Education on Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship. It was organized in the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport in Zagreb on 4 June 2012, by Croatian Youth Network, Human Right Centre, Centre for Peace Studies and GONG.

The possibility to get informed about the draft of the future curricula and the civil society project "Introducing the new era of human rights and democracy in Croatian schools" attracted school teachers, principals and professional associates of many different profiles - from English Language teachers to school librarians - because of the specific cross-curricular approach that will be used in the implementation of the Education on Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship. The previously mentioned project supports official efforts of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports in introducing Education on Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship in the formal educational system in Croatia.

Some of the key speakers were Ms Nevenka Lončarić-Jelačić, Senior Adviser for the National Curricula in the Agency for Education, and university professor Ms Vedrana Spajić Vrkaš from the Research and Educational Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb.  Ms Lončarić-Jelačić spoke about the recommendations that the Agency for Education (AFE) has given to the implementation process of the Education on Human Rights and Democratic Citizenship (EHRDC) in the formal educational system: AFE proposed a two-year period of  initial and gradual implementation of EHRDC in schools, considering  individual possibilities of every school, its teachers and the needs of the local community. She also announced the intention of AFE to start with the experimental implementation of the EHRDC in six schools, in parallel with the pilot program of the project "Introducing the new era of human rights and democracy in Croatian schools", which will also start with experimental implementation in six other schools, in the areas of the special state concern. Ms Spajić Vrkaš in her presentation put a strong accent on the role of EHRDC in the development and shaping of the youth.

CSOs will also give their contribution to this process trough their proposal of the training for the teachers and professional associates that will implement EHRDC in their schools. For this reason, Ms Iva Zenzerović Šloser, representative of the Centre for Peace Studies, gave a detailed review of the training curricula, while Ms Ankica Milić from CYN, project coordinator, presented the outlines of the project.
