Young people must have strong presence on public TV

Croatian Youth Network organized on 16 October a public discussion at  the Human Rights House in Zagreb, on the status of young people in public television and the need for better TV program for young people. The participants of the discussion  articulated a set of clear requirements that must be met in order to create the conditions in which Croatian public TV can broadcast quality program for youth. Prominent experts and  representatives of the Croatian Radio Television (HRT) agreed about the need for restructuring the HRT and its programs, and to bring synergy and better information flow between editorial boards and programs, but they also agreed on the need to rejuvenate the organizational structure of HRT, which is absolutely necessary because  it will also lead to greater representation of young people.

Vlasta Ilišin, researcher at the Institute for Social Research, commented in her speech the fact that the latest data show that television, as a primary source of information for young people, has been slowly but surely losing the battle with the Internet. However, when it comes to information about politics and other "serious" issues, TV is still the most important source for youth. It was repeatedly told, both by spakers and the audience that there is an impression that the program explicitly targeting young people avoids treating certain topics such as sexuality and drug addiction. Representatives of the HRT said that this observation is partially true, but on this particular issue there are legal obstacles which prevent broadcasting any contemporary and relevant content for young people.
